Kentucky has passed a new law to crack down on uninsured motor vehicle owners. As a lawyer who regularly deals with uninsured motorist issues in the face of devastating injuries caused by the uninsured driver, I welcome any help by the state. Frankly, it is irresponsible to drive an uninsured vehicle. I'd like to see stiffer penalties.
Beginning June 1, 2012, the Kentucky Department of Vehicle Regulation will begin enforcing the new law by mailing notices to owners of registered motor vehicles that have been without personal insurance coverage for more than 60 days.
The notices coming from the state will warn the owners that their registrations will be canceled if they do not obtain the required insurance or show proof of existing insurance within 30 days.
It is against the law in Kentucky to operate a motor vehicle without insurance. The law was adopted because state legislators said vehicle owners who abide by the law are too often victimized in crashes involving uninsured drivers.
So what can you do to protect yourself and your family against irresponsible uninsured drivers? Buy "uninsured motorist" insurance coverage. It is the best money that you can spend. While you're at it, add a coverage called "underinsured motorist" insurance coverage. I've seen many families that have been able to utilize this coverage to pay for hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of medical bills. By the same token, I've seen families saddled with hundreds of thousands of dollars of medical debt because they did not have this coverage. Do yourself and your family a favor and buy this inexpensive coverage. Personally, I recommend a $250,000 policy.
